OCCIDENTAL ROAD HOUSE

A timber frame house using round columns and horizontal timbers recycled from an old industrial building in Northern California.   It is an open plan with almost no interior walls, except for those used to enclose the bathrooms.

The pond and pool fill the courtyard.

Making the house the same grade as the outside just seemed to happen.  The stone-filled drainage trenches under the drip line take the water away.

Getting the bark off natural rounds is a matter of timing.  The bark must be removed in the spring and taken off as soon as possible after the tree is cut.  Then the extremely nutritious cambian layer just under the bark needs to be neutralized with salt or bleach and much washing with a soft cloth.  The result is one of nature’s most beautiful surfaces.
